With the help of the split function existing campaigns can be split regarding their distribution list. This can be done in equal proportions or by separating a certain number of addresses. Both parameters – number of shares and addresses – are freely adjustable. By splitting you create several identical campaigns with split distribution lists from one campaign with one distribution list.

The additional campaigns created through splitting can be recognized by the campaign ID of the original campaign in italics, preceding the campaign name. The appendixes -S1, -S2, -S3 etc symbolize the number of newly created split campaigns.

Example: Original campaign ID is 40026928, the split campaign then will receive the reference ID40026928-S1 preceding the campaign name (when split symmetrically into 2 campaigns).

Campaigns with huge distribution lists may require splitting in order to dispatch the campaign portions at staggered intervals, thus avoiding overload of own web servers. Furthermore the function allows testing of distinct subject lines by separating a representative number of addresses. After dispatching to these, the subject line generating the best opening and click rates can be identified on the basis of reporting figures.

 For dividing of a certain campaign, please click the symbol in the respective campaign line.

In the dialog „Campaign splitting“ please choose the rule by which the original campaign and the distribution list shall be split:

Split in X Campaigns symmetrically

This option will create as many new campaigns from the original as you have selected. Minimum is 2 campaigns, maximum 40. Please mind that the original campaign will be first in the list of newly created split campaigns. Example: selecting „Split in 2 campaigns symmetrically“ will result in 2 campaigns: the original campaign (with a reduced distribution list) plus an additional copy of it with the remaining addresses (not 3 campaigns!).  

This method will split the original distribution list into equal parts, meaning total number of addresses divided by number of split campaigns. This can of course create an aberration of +/-1 in a distribution list when the original list cannot be evenly divided by the number of split campaigns. For instance, if you symmetrically split a campaign with 21,133 recipients into 2 campaigns, the first campaign will obtain 10,566 recipients, the second one 10,567 since half a recipient is not possible.

Split in X Campaigns asymmetrically with y addresses including one „rest“ campaign.

This method creates multiple new campaigns from one. You can choose their number like in the previous section, but additionally indicate the desired distribution list size for the newly created campaigns. This usually results in a remainder of the original distribution list which will be assigned to the last created campaign. Thus the last campaign often will not contain the selected number of recipients but a few more.

 

Split on the basis of CONTACT FIELD (in) without groups, groups of 10, 100, 1,000 or 10,000.

This variant will automatically split the distribution list by a pre-selected contact field like SALUTATION, TITLE or GENDER. Here you can determine whether all recipients separated this way should be loaded into one campaign (without grouping), or whether the required number of campaigns should be crated containing distribution lists with 10, 100, 1,000 or 10,000 recipients holding the selected contact field.

Splitting into groups is not recommended for large distribution lists since this will create hundreds or thousands of campaigns, each with 10 or 100 recipients, each of them requiring manual sending.

Before splitting by a contact field, the system will display the values found in the selected field, and for how many recipients each of this value applies and thus will fall upon a separate distribution list.
